Bridging the Gap: Kinlochleven Students Explore Careers at Mowi

Developing the Young Workforce West Highland (DYW) recently had the pleasure of taking students from the Kinlochleven High School Skills for Work Employability Programme for a behind-the-scenes visit to the Mowi Farm on Loch Leven.

The visit offered students a firsthand look at modern aquaculture and the diverse career pathways available right on their doorstep.

Discovering a World of Opportunities

The visit kicked off with an insightful overview from Jayne MacKay, Community Engagement Officer, on Mowi’s global operations and the sheer scale of the business, which encompasses hundreds of roles—spanning science, technology, engineering, logistics, marketing, and sustainability.

Local Focus at Loch Leven

The group then met with the local team, including Andrew Martin (Farm Manager)  and Dan Wilson (Cleanerfish Biologist), to look more closely at the specific operations running at the Loch Leven site. The students got a real feel for day-to-day life on the farm, learning about:

  • The technology used to monitor fish health and environmental conditions.
  • The daily routines of the site team and the skills required to manage a thriving aquatic environment.
  • Local career paths, demonstrating that you don’t have to leave the Highlands to build a rewarding career.

A huge thank you to Jayne and the entire Loch Leven team for hosting such an inspiring and educational visit. We look forward to seeing them across a range of DYW events they support.
