Launch Your Subsea Career and Explore Exciting Learning Opportunities with UHI North, West and Hebrides

UHI North, West and Hebrides is thrilled to announce the launch of its pioneering “Pathway to ROV – 101 essentials” training course, starting 1st September 2025 at the Fort William campus. This 10-day pilot course offers an exciting pathway into the subsea sector, designed for those looking to develop foundational knowledge and practical skills related to remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

A New Era in Subsea Training: Partnership with DRIFT Offshore

Developed in partnership with subsea resourcing and training specialist DRIFT Offshore, the course provides hands-on training focused on three key technical areas: electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and networking/data communications. Participants will gain the skills needed to support, maintain, and troubleshoot core ROV systems, aligned with International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) standards.

David Campbell, Director of Business Enterprise and Development at UHI North, West and Hebrides, explains:
“This collaboration blends DRIFT Offshore’s industry expertise with our academic excellence and facilities. It’s designed to build a skilled pipeline for the subsea industry, offering trainees confidence and employers reassurance.”

Celebrating Excellence: ‘Inspirational’ Students of the Year

Congratulations to Adam Hutchison, a 20-year-old NC Creative Music Sound Production and DJing student from Barcaldine, Argyllshire, who has been named UHI North, West and Hebrides’ Further Education Student of the Year.

Adam, who studies at the Fort William campus, has impressed staff with his positivity, resilience, and creativity. Despite living with cerebral palsy, he brings fun and energy to the course and has created popular lunchtime DJ sets on campus, inspiring his peers and creating a vibrant inclusive atmosphere. Lecturer Alasdair Murray praised Adam’s determination and the positive impact he’s had on the college community.
